Tram Line One

  Back in time
tie limited, on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council, held a public consultation to gather comments on route plan options for Lines One & Two of the proposed tram scheme in Edinburgh between 14th May and 10th July 2003. The consultation results and preferred route maps are available in this section.

The information and comments gathered as part of that consultation were processed and informed a report to the City of Edinburgh Council in December 2003. All of the documents included in this report, on which the Council made their decision to proceed, are available in the documents section.

Subsequently, Private Bills were introduced to the Scottish Parliament on 30 January 2004. The Bills can be viewed at the Scottish Parliament’s website.

Trams will save time for passengers and save money for businesses if they are introduced.
Existing routes into the city are congested. Trams would offer a real choice to the travelling public to increase accessibility in and around the city, help ease traffic hold ups and reduce environmental damage.

The Scottish Executive has announced funding of £375 million towards the planning and construction of a tram network for Lines One & Two, the core of a high quality, reliable public transport system for Edinburgh. A quality 21st century travel choice!

It’s Time For Change
Edinburgh is at the heart of a region of over one million people. The city’s population is expected to grow rapidly over the next 20 years, with up to 20,000* new residents. The city’s catchment area is expanding, bringing consequent problems of traffic congestion and pollution. These could threaten Edinburgh’s future prosperity.

Congestion already costs industry thousands of pounds annually, money wasted through lost time. As car ownership continues to increase at an alarming rate, road traffic threatens to further clog up the main routes into Edinburgh.

Now is the right time to create a long-term solution and provide high quality transport systems that can keep Edinburgh moving. Access into and around the city centre needs to be improved.
